A monastic site with a rich historical past
Founded in 651 by Saint Remacle, Stavelot Abbey is one of the oldest monastery foundations in Belgium. For over a millennium, it served as the heart of the sovereign Stavelot-Malmedy Abbey-Principality.
Listed as Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia, the site today combines majestic remains of the former abbey church with 16th and 18th-century buildings and modern cultural spaces. Surrounded by a park, the abbey provides a peaceful backdrop for exploration and culture.
An exceptional cultural tour
Transformed into a major cultural hub, Stavelot Abbey houses three fascinating museums under one roof:
- Historical Museum of the Stavelot-Malmedy Principality: Modern, interactive displays recount the unique history of this state, which remained independent from its creation right up to the French Revolution.
- Guillaume Apollinaire Museum: The only museum in the world dedicated to the famous French poet, commemorating his stay in Stavelot during the summer of 1899.
- Remains of the Ancient Abbey Church: Explore the archaeological foundations and footprint of the giant 11th-century church, showing the former power of the site.
- Complementing this historical trail, the complex also houses the Spa-Francorchamps Racetrack Museum, featuring an exceptional collection of legendary racing vehicles.
