Monschau: A journey through time in a postcard setting

Nestled in a narrow Eifel valley, just across the Belgian border, Monschau (Montjoie) is a true architectural gem. Crisscrossed by the Rur River, the town has preserved an exceptional collection of 18th-century half-timbered houses and winding cobbled alleys at the foot of its imposing medieval castle. It makes the perfect day trip for a romantic and refreshing getaway just minutes from your gîte.

A romantic town rich in discoveries and craftsmanship:

Between textile heritage, picturesque lanes, and gourmet treats, Monschau offers an enchanting stopover:

  • The historic centre & half-timbered houses: A walk along the Rur takes you past more than 300 listed buildings, where every view looks straight out of a fairytale book.
  • The Red House (Rotes Haus): This former town mansion of a wealthy cloth manufacturer is now a museum showcasing the opulent 18th-century lifestyle, famous for its self-supporting winding staircase.
  • Craftsmanship & Gastronomy: A visit to the historic mustard mill (Historische Senfmühle), the glassworks (Glashütte), as well as numerous craft shops and cozy cafés.
  • Monschau Castle (Burg Monschau): Overlooking the town, the castle provides sweeping panoramic views over the slate roofs and the surrounding valley.

Gîte host tip 💡

« Make the drive from the gîte part of the experience by driving across the High Fens plateau. The scenic road is gorgeous all year round. Once there, enjoy strolling aimlessly through the narrow streets before sitting down for a gourmet treat to taste local Printen or a rich hot chocolate. »
