Visiting Reinhardstein Castle: The medieval treasure of the High Fens
Perched on the heights of Ovifat, just a few minutes from Malmedy, Reinhardstein Castle stands proudly on a rocky spur. Also known as Burg Metternich, this historical monument offers one of Wallonia’s most picturesque silhouettes, surrounded by wild and preserved nature.
A spectacular rebirth
Built in 1354 by Renaud de Waimes, the castle endured centuries of history before falling into ruins. Thanks to the passion of Professor Jean Overloop, it was entirely rebuilt in the 1970s. Today, it authentically showcases medieval life with an impressive collection of armour, tapestries, and period furniture available to discover through captivating guided tours.
Why include it in your stay?
Reinhardstein Castle is more than just a heritage site; it is a full-fledged destination for outdoor enthusiasts:
- Hiking trails: The castle is the start or endpoint for magnificent trails along the Warche river. Don’t miss the Reinhardstein waterfall, the highest in Belgium!
- Themed events: Medieval festivals, archery trails, and temporary exhibitions bring the site to life throughout the year.
- Prime location: Ideally situated near Lake Robertville and Signal de Botrange, it is the perfect activity to complete a day trip in the East Cantons.
